When your pet has an accident on the carpet, it's best to treat it as soon as possible.  A fresh stain can be removed more thoroughly, however, this treatment still works great for older pet stains.  Several factors such as the pet's diet or medications that the pet is taking can cause the urine to permanently discolor the carpet.  The treatment should still be performed as it will remove the urine from the carpet and the underneath padding, preventing bacterial growth.

Why Perform a Pet Urine Treatment

When a pet has a urine accident on the carpet the urine usually seeps down through the carpet and into the padding underneath.  If it's a large accident (approx softball-sized or larger), the urine can even seep through the padding and soak the wood flooring underneath.  If left untreated the urine could cause odors and bacterial growth.

This treatment will allow you to flush the urine out of your carpet the same way that most professionals do.  Using a vacuum style carpet cleaning machine such as a Bissel may cause the stain to disappear but won't treat the urine that has seeped into the padding or subfloor.  Even if you had a professional steam cleaning done, it still wouldn't be enough to treat the urine in the padding or subfloor.

HOW TO PERFORM THE TREATMENT

  1. Dilute the enzyme pet urine treatment chemical according to the manufacturer's directions.  This dilution ratio is typically 1 quart of chemical to 3 quarts of water giving you 1 gallon of ready to use product.
  2. Saturate the urine stain thoroughly to allow the enzymes to digest the urine.  Apply the product 30% more than the visible stain on the surface.  The urine tends to spread further out as it goes deeper into the padding and subfloor.  The product needs to make contact with all urine in the carpet.
  3. Let the product dwell in the carpet for 30 minutes as it digests the urine.
  4. Using a wet/dry vac and the SOS Brand Sub Surface Extraction Hand Tool, rinse the carpet with water.  Start by extracting the product that has been dwelling for 30 minutes.  Then pour roughly the same amount of water onto the stain and extract it.  Repeat this process until you no longer see any urine or suds coming through the clear head of the extraction tool.
